What do macaws look like?
Macaws are one of the most distinguished looking parrot species, easily recognized by their large heads, strong curved beak and long tail. They come in ai variety of vibrant colors, the most common being the blue-and-gold macaw, green-winged macaw and scarlet macaw.
Macaws are also the largest of the parrot species, reaching nearly 40 inches long!
What should I feed my macaw?
Your macaw will need food rich in oils and calories, as their natural diet includes seeds, nuts and  fruit. There are specially formulated pellets and seed diets designed for your parrot - however it’s important to include a mix! Include formulated foods, seeds, dried fruit, nuts, and fresh fruits and vegetables in your pet’s diet.
Apples, pears, plums, oranges, bananas, mangos, carrots, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, and even dandelions are all great supplements to your parrot’s diet!
What kind of cage does my macaw need?
Since your macaw is large, it needs a cage tall enough to prevent its feathers from hitting the bottom of the cage. If your cage isn’t tall enough, your macaw’s tail feathers will bend and break. It’s important to keep your size restrictions in mind when considering adding a macaw to your family. Macaws need plenty of space! Your parrot should be able to move freely (no feathers touching the cage) between two perches.
What kind of personality do macaws have?
Macaws have a big personality, but are a very friendly and intelligent bird species. When raised and socialized properly they can entertain themselves while you’re away and also enjoying being part of the family when you’re around. Macaws are relatively easy to train, but still require patience and trust.
Macaws have very loud vocalizations that should be taken into account if you live in an apartment. That said, they can also be taught to talk, whistle, and imitate sounds or noises that they hear around them.
What kind of toys should I give my macaw?
Exercise and play is an important part of caring for your bird. Macaws require activities to prevent disease and signs of stress, like screeching and feather picking.
Of course, two perches are essential additions to your parrot's cage. Your bird will love to walk on them.  You should also include toys like climbing ropes, chains, bells, swings, and other wooden toys. Even destructible toys are fun for you pet, as they are interactive.
It is recommended that you also keep a playpen in your home for your macaw. This large, free-standing perch will give your parrot some extra space to be entertained and stretch his wings.
